Retired Teacher/Administrator: 30+ years working with elementary age students with learning differences Training and experience with a multitude of currently used educational programs, including Phonographix, Wilson Fundations, Read Naturally, Handwriting Without Tears, Go Math, Multisensory Math, Stern Materials/Structural Math and others. I have a very strong background in helping children to learn and use skills relating to phonology: discriminating, segmenting and blending sounds for developing a reliable decoding ability. I also love Math and wish all kids could love the magic of it. I find that hands-on learning materials are must-haves for actually showing children how math works. But math must be taught carefully so as to inspire confidence and the freedom to experiment and think. Developing skills for good Writing is often the most challenging for all students. My experience in using structured writing programs, like "Framing Your Thoughts" and a narrative model like the "The Story Grammar Marker" from "MindWing Concepts" have been very helpful in teaching children how to write good, rich sentences and organize ideas for presentation. I have seen children became not just more tolerant of writing but actually enjoy writing using ideas from the "Being a Writer" program, which uses good literature to stimulate thoughts and ideas for writing.

I am still interested in learning about people and the world, so I read a good deal and still jump up to search on the Internet for information about some person or historical issue or event. During a good part of the year, I love to garden and find watching things grow very satisfying. I like a good intellectual discussion with adults and I love trying to figure kids out: How are they thinking and why? How can I use that information to teach them? How can I connect with them to encourage taking risks and asking questions? After so many years of working with children, I still find them fascinating! During the summer months I like to see children at least two times per week. My charge for tutoring is somewhat negotiable.
